CHS researcher awarded $100,000

Molly McNulty, a researcher at Children's Hospital at Strong, is doing her part to increase adolescents' access to health care--mental, physical, and otherwise. She's embarking on a 12-month $100,000 study that will identify state policies for providing preventive services to adolescents.

The study, funded by the Center for Health Care Strategies, will focus solely on adolescents who are enrolled in Medicaid or the State Child Health Insurance Program. The report McNulty produces will highlight ways that state legislatures and agencies can improve policies to ensure that all lower-income adolescents have access to preventive health care.

"This project is nationally significant because medical guidelines about preventing health problems in adolescents have been developed during the last five years, yet little is known about the extent to which state policies have incorporated these recommendations," she said.

University hosts Fiona Apple

Fiona Apple arrives at the Eastman Theatre on Saturday, February 26, at 8 p.m. as one stop on her 19-city national tour. The concert is sponsored by University of Rochester Concerts.

Apple's new CD, When the Pawn..., follows her debut release, Tidal. Her latest CD has been a success with the public--appearing on Billboard's Top 100 chart since November--and the critics. "When the Pawn...is richer, deeper, and stronger than Tidal in every way...a far more muscular approach to both the songs and the singing," stated Rolling Stone.

Tickets are on sale at the Record Archive stores on Mt. Hope and East Avenues, and at the Common Market in Wilson Commons. For additional information contact the Wilson Commons Information Desk, x5-5911.

ESM opens Internet café

The Eastman School will hold a grand-opening celebration for its new Fingal's Internet Café and Hurricane Down Under food shop on Tuesday, February 8, from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. There will be music by Beyondo and snacks courtesy of James Graffrath, proprietor of downtown's Hurricane Deli, which is operating the ESM food shop.

Hurricane Down Under--which sells coffees, pastries, sandwiches, calzones, and a variety of other snacks and sweets--is the newest addition to the recently renovated gathering place now known as Fingal's Internet Café. The basement area was formerly known as Fingal's Cave, named after a famous cavern in Scotland and a musical work written by Mendelssohn after a visit to the site.

The food shop is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. (closed Sundays). The space adjacent to the shop features tables, chairs, a copy machine, a bulletin board, and student mailboxes. Eight new iMac computers are available for students to check and send e-mail, or to surf the Web.

Home-buying seminars offered

The Office of Human Resources has scheduled representatives from the Home Store to host three on-site home-buying seminars. The Home Store, a program funded by the city of Rochester and operated by the Urban League of Rochester, offers home-buying assistance and advice to people of every income level.

Seminar participants will learn how to prepare for home ownership as well as what's involved in shopping for a house. Information on budgeting, credit, and the mortgage process also will be covered. Home Store representatives will be available to meet with individuals to answer specific questions about home ownership and the home-buying process, and to review individual circumstances.

The seminars will be offered on the following dates: Tuesday, February 29, 7-8:30 a.m., north end of the Medical Center's House of Six Nations Cafeteria; Wednesday, March 1, noon-1:30 p.m., also in the URMC cafeteria; and Thursday, March 2, noon-1:30 p.m., Stackel Room, Wilson Commons.

Space is limited. Call the Home Store, 325-4663, to reserve a seat or for more information. (Se habla Espanol.)
