In Brief

Heyen collection is dedicated

Poet William Heyen and Hannelore Heyen, his wife, will discuss their extensive collection of writings by 20th-century poets and novelists on Sunday, March 26, at 2 p.m. when those books and papers are officially installed in the Department of Rare Books and Special Collections at Rush Rhees Library.

The Heyen collection of approximately 10,000 items is considered to be one of the finest assemblages of inscribed first editions, manuscripts, and correspondence from major American writers during the past 30 years. The collection was acquired by the University in January 1998.

For the March 26 program, which is open to the public, the Heyens will speak in the Welles-Brown Room of the library. At 3 p.m., a reception will be held in the Department of Rare Books. Selected works from the Heyen collection also will be on display in the department and in its Alan F. Hilfiker Gallery from March 26 to May 20.

SIMCON returns to campus

SIMCON, the University of Rochester Simulation Gaming Association's annual games conference, will be held on Thursday, March 23, 7:30 p.m. to midnight, and then for 49 hours straight from 6 p.m. on Friday, March 24, to 7 p.m. on Sunday, March 26. More than 500 gaming enthusiasts are expected to attend the event in Wilson Commons.

SIMCON XXII boasts many new features, including an art show, two all-night sessions, and a 50-50 charity auction. The auction will be held on Saturday during the breaks between event time slots. Half of the proceeds from this auction will be donated to the Cancer Center at Strong Memorial Hospital. The gift will be given in memory of William Sheftic '90, a former URSGA member who lost his life to cancer in 1998.

URSGA is a nonprofit agency of the Students' Association. For more information, contact URSGA, x5-6186, or check out the SIMCON Web site at www.simcon.org.

Vacation Club starts soon

The Family Care Program of Human Resources is sponsoring Vacation Club for children ages 5 to 12. The program, operated by Camp Fire Boys & Girls, is open to University employees and will be held Monday, April 17, to Friday, April 21, 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the River Campus. There is a weekly program fee and a registration fee. Call Family Care, x3-4644, for additional information and registration forms.

Calling all longtime staffers

Staff members who will have worked for the University for 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, and 45 years by June 30, 2000, have been sent a gift selection card and brochure. Any staff members who think they're eligible for such a gift and who haven't received a card should contact Doris Robinson in Human Resources, x3-4644. All cards must be returned by Wednesday, April 5.

New tuition rates announced

In line with the University's continuing commitment to keep tuition increases as small as possible, tuition for most undergraduates will increase by 3.7 percent in 2000-01--the lowest such increase in the past 27 years.

Tuition in 2000-01 for undergraduates in the College and in the School of Nursing will be $23,130. The average room and board charge will be $7,760. The overall term bill for resident students thus will increase by 3.6 percent.

Tuition for Eastman School students will be $21,040, a 3.5 percent increase; for medical students at the School of Medicine and Dentistry, $28,000, a 4.1 percent increase; and for Simon School students, $26,460, a 5.5 percent increase.

Special day brings kids to work

"Take Your Children To Work Day" will be held on Thursday, April 20, 8 a.m. to noon. Numerous departments across the University will be participating, including biology, dentistry, the blood bank, computer science, and several River Campus research labs. The event, sponsored annually by the Medical Center Administrative Group (MCAG), is an opportunity for children of employees to learn and experience the diverse career opportunities available within the University system.

Juice and donuts will be provided for all participating children, plus they will receive a bag of surprises at the end of their morning activities. Registration is limited to 200 participants and will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis. Registration forms are available at the Strong Memorial Hospital Information Desk. They will soon be available on the MCAG Web site at www.mcag.rochester.edu/urmc/MCAG/index.html, which will provide further details.

More information also may be obtained by calling Dan Leyrer, x5-0824, or sending e-mail to dan_leyrer@urmc.rochester.edu.

Know your voice mail

University Telecommunications Division offers some advice on using voice mail. When programming a phone to call forward into voice mail or setting up one-touch buttons, pay special attention to the internal voice mail number, x4-3660, or external voice mail number, 274-3660, to avoid misdialing. Those who have an outside number beginning with "275" should be particularly careful. UTD also recommends testing the program setup to be sure it's operating correctly.
