NOW president to speak on women's issues
Since 1991, when Ireland left her corporate and commercial law practice to preside over NOW, she has spearheaded efforts to bring the group into the forefront of contemporary politics. Currently, the organization has over 30,000 members and is well known for its role in improving social and economic conditions for women in the United States and around the world. Ireland represents NOW in England, France, Germany, Brazil, Cuba, and Kenya. In 1992 she invited women from more than 45 countries to Washington, D.C., initiating NOW's Global Feminist Conference celebrating the organization's silver anniversary. The feminist leader has made numerous appearances on television and has been featured in many major newspapers. In addition, she periodically writes for the National NOW Times, which has a subscription base of more than 300,000. While at Rochester, Ireland also will participate in a free panel discussion for the University community on "Women's Issues in Presidential Politics" at 3 p.m. in the Gamble Room of Rush Rhees Library. Admission to the evening presentation is free to University students with I.D.; others will be charged for general admission.
