Student's papers presented to library
The conference, which has been held since 1995, features papers by graduate students from across the University on topics relating to gender issues in history, medicine, psychology, nursing, anthropology, political science, education, and other fields. The best work also is honored with an award from the Gender and Society Group, which carries an honorarium of $1,000 and was renamed the Allison Schmidt Prize in 1996. Schmidt's interest in feminism and literature grew while she was working on her master's degree in English at the University. She wanted to teach English on the secondary level while exploring feminist research in education and entered the Warner School, but she was killed by her fiancé in spring 1995. Her parents, Howard and Sheryl Schmidt, established a scholarship in her memory. Recently, they also donated her papers to the University. The works include Schmidt's writings for her courses, notes on her classes and books, and personal notes on her professional aspirations. "It's our hope that those who are interested in studies of feminist scholarship in the 1990s, especially in English and education, will find this collection useful," said Lynn Gordon, associate professor of education and of history and chair of the Gender and Society Group.
