Artist Lyons receives Fairchild Award

Elizabeth Lyons, a sculptor who has been a teacher at the School of the Arts for over a decade, has been named the recipient of the 75th Lillian Fairchild Award.

The award, administered by the University, is presented to a Rochester-area resident who has produced the best visual, literary, or musical work of art during the past year. Lyons was cited for her work that was included in the biennial Rochester-Finger Lakes Exhibition at the Memorial Art Gallery. The piece was part of a series of heart-shaped vessels. (Take a look at Lyons's work that was featured in the exhibition by logging on to www.rochester.edu/pr/Currents/V27/V27N09/story2.html.)

Known for her sculptures in glass, Lyons is the founder and director of More Fire Glass Studio, which provides both studio space for artists and education programs for the community in glassblowing, glass sculpture, beadmaking, stained glass, and glass casting.

The Fairchild Award was established by Herman Fairchild of the Department of Geology in memory of his daughter, an accomplished designer who died of tuberculosis at age 32. This year also marks 150 years since Herman Fairchild's birth.
