May 22--Computer Workshop. In "Computers Demystified," participants learn quick and easy ways to put their computers to good use and save hours of aggravation. Fee/registration required. Creative Workshop, 7-10 p.m. Call the gallery at ext. 3056 to register.

May 23--Lecture. Marlene Hamann-Whitmore, assistant curator of education, speaks on Bessie Potter Vonnoh's sculpture Fountain Figure. Free with gallery admission. Auditorium, 7:30 p.m.

May 26, June 2, 9--Preschool Family Workshop. For children ages 2-5 with an adult. Includes a story and an exploratory tour of the gallery. Adults and children work together to create an art project. May 26 workshop led by Warren Mianecke; June 2 workshop led by Paloma Nunez-Regueiro; June 9 workshop led by Mimi Smith. Fee/registration required. May 30--Concert. "Les Echos de la Voix": Cantar e Sonar (Deborah Liggett, soprano, and Deborah Fox, lute and theorbo) performs 17th- and 18th-century songs. Free with gallery admission. Fountain Court, 7:30 p.m.

June 5--Computer Workshop. "The Internet and I" is a nuts-and-bolts guide to Internet tools. Fee/registration required. Creative Workshop, 7-10 p.m. Call the gallery at ext. 3056 to register.

June 6--What's Up. Susan Nurse, visual resources coordinator, speaks on Martin Johnson Heade's Newbury Hayfield at Sunset and Hummingbird with Cattleya and Dendrobium Orchids. Free with gallery admission. Auditorium, 5:30 p.m.

June 6--Lecture. In honor of the Gallery Council's 60th anniversary, Marjorie Searl, assistant director for curatorial affairs, speaks on recent acquisitions given by the council. Free with gallery admission. Auditorium, 7:30 p.m.

June 9--Alive at the MAG. The annual party on the lawn, with music by Tripping Billies and Perfect World, a cash bar, food vendors, and a chance to meet friends old and new. Admission charge. Front lawn, 5-10 p.m.

June 10--Preview Party. In celebration of the opening of Twentieth-Century Still-Life Paintings from the Phillips Collection, enjoy live music by multiple bands, performances of Gilbert and Sullivan selections, light refreshments, a cash bar, and a dessert bar. Gallery and front lawn, 8 p.m.-midnight. Reservations and tickets available through the gallery at ext. 3510; nonmember tickets also available at Starbucks and Parkleigh.

June 11--Exhibition Tour. Highlights works from Twentieth-Century Still-Life Paintings from the Phillips Collection. Free with gallery admission. Meet at the admission desk, 2 p.m.

June 11-August 20--Twentieth-Century Still-Life Paintings from the Phillips Collection. One of the world's finest small museums, the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C., lays claim to the title "America's first museum of modern art." Running the gamut from the purely representational to the abstract, this exhibition includes 60 still-life paintings by such European and American masters as Pierre Bonnard, Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Henri Rousseau, Ben Shahn, and Milton Avery. Grand Gallery.

Through June 18--Stephen Johnson: Alphabet City and City by Numbers. While walking in New York City, artist Stephen Johnson noticed that the keystone of an archway formed the letter S. Eventually, he managed to find all 26 letters of the alphabet--and the numbers 1 through 21--in the various shapes and objects of the cityscape. This adventure inspired Johnson to illustrate two children's books: Alphabet City and City by Numbers. Fourteen of his original pastel paintings for the books are on view. Children's Corridor.

Through June 25--Custer, Crazy Horse, and the River of Electricity: A Painter's Response to Poetry. This exhibition, created especially for MAG, includes mural-sized paintings that California artist Deloss McGraw created in response to poems by William Heyen. Lockhart Gallery.

Through 2001--About Face: Copley's Portrait of a Colonial Silversmith. In this interactive installation families can learn about John Singleton Copley, the most famous portrait painter in Colonial America, and his friend, silversmith Nathaniel Hurd, whom Copley painted. The installation offers a view of life in Colonial Boston. Dorothy McBride Gill Education Center.

At Rush Rhees Library

Through June 30--What Holds the Words: Selections from the William and Hannelore Heyen Collection. The Heyen collection, part of the University's new Hyam Plutzik Library for Contemporary Writing, is an approximately 10,000-piece assemblage of inscribed first editions, manuscripts, and correspondence from major American writers during the past 30 years. Selected works are on display in the Alan F. Hilfiker Gallery, Department of Rare Books and Special Collections, 2nd Floor. Free and open to the public. Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

Through June 30--Elmer Adler and the Pynson Printers. An exhibition of books and articles documenting printer, book collector, and Rochester native Elmer Adler's many contributions to the world of books and bibliography. Free and open to the public. June 3--12th Annual Night of Encores.* Pianist Gary Palmer and eight fellow performing artists are joined by a 30-piece all-star student orchestra. Performances include excerpts from a Ned Bobcock play and vocal and instrumental music. The event helps fund lupus research at the School of Medicine and Dentistry and affiliated institutions, and raise public awareness about the disease. Tickets include a catered dessert reception following the performance. Sponsored by the Community Education Division. CPR Classes--Offered by the Office for Educational Resources. To register and for more information call x5-7666 as soon as possible, as classes fill up quickly. Payment is required one week in advance. The American Heart Association's manual, required for original courses, is available in Room 2-7520 for a fee.
