New area code takes effect next year

ext year the Rochester area will begin its move toward adopting a new area code. The following schedule, provided by David Lewis, director of University Telecommunications in the new Information Technology Services division, offers some guidelines for what changes can be expected and when. ITS will provide more information as it becomes available.

August 2000: New area code should be announced

August 2000-mid-February 2001: Operational and network preparation for new area code; current 716 area code still in effect

Mid-February 2001-mid-November 2001: Permissible dialing with both area codes in which either exchange will work; staff members should be using stationery and business cards reflecting the new area code

Mid-November 2001-August 2002: New area code in effect; an "intercept" message announces new area code for calls made to old area code

August 2002 and onward: New area code in effect; intercept message not available
