Yellowjacket Day joins Convocation
This year marks the fourth presentation of the Goergen Awards, recognizing contributions to undergraduate education in the College. The awards are named for and sponsored by Board of Trustees Chairman Robert Goergen '60 and his wife, Pamela. (For more on the Goergen Awards, see the related story.) The official Convocation ceremony to welcome freshmen and new and returning students at the beginning of the academic year starts at noon. It will be followed immediately by a ceremony dedicating the newly constructed Dandelion Square. A picnic for students, faculty, and staff in the College, as well as Yellowjacket Day activities, will be held on Wilson Commons Lawn after the dedication is completed. Yellowjacket Day, scheduled to continue until 8 p.m., includes carnival rides and novelties, student performances, and food vendors. A concert featuring The Toasters will start at 6 p.m. The group debuted its first single in 1983 and was the first U.S. ska band to release a record in Japan, Europe, and Argentina. "Ska" is a type of dance music that traces its roots to 1960s Jamaica; reggae is a form of ska music. The Activities Fair, which showcases student clubs and organizations, will be held on Dandelion Square, 3-5 p.m. In case of rain, Convocation ceremonies will take place in Strong Auditorium and the campus picnic will be held in Douglass Dining Center. Yellowjacket Day activities will move into Wilson Commons and the Activities Fair will be held inside the Field House.
