Murphy succeeds Brault as HR director

Charles Murphy, director of human resources for the Medical Center, will succeed Albert Brault as the University's human resources director. The succession is planned in conjunction with Brault's longstanding plans to retire on January 1.

"It's been a pleasure to have two seasoned professionals in these key HR positions for an extended period, and to have a long-term transition plan in place," said Ronald Paprocki, senior vice president for administration and finance.

Murphy will begin taking on operational responsibility immediately for human resource functions, Paprocki said, and Brault will concentrate on completion of several major projects initiated during his tenure.

"Al Brault has made very significant contributions during his years at Rochester, and we are fortunate to be able to take advantage of his extensive experience in a review over the next few months of our human resource policies and practices," Paprocki said.

A senior member of the Medical Center administration, Murphy joined the University in 1998 after serving for three years as vice president for human resources for the Buffalo General Health System. Previously, he had been vice president for human resources at the Aliquippa Hospital in Aliquippa, Pa.; vice president for human resources at the Berwick Healthcare Corp. in Berwick, Pa.; and director of human resources for SUN Home Health Services in Northumberland, Pa. He also had served in managerial positions for two food store chains. He holds B.S. and M.B.A. degrees from Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania.

At Rochester, Brault has overseen a comprehensive restructuring of the human resources division and pioneered the use of broadscale employee satisfaction surveys. He joined the University in 1996 after seven years as executive director of the Center for Advanced Human Resource Studies at Cornell University's School of Industrial and Labor Relations. Previously he had been director of human resources for Eastman Kodak Co.'s Diversified Technologies and Life Sciences Business Group; director of the company's corporate training, management development, and organizational research; and director of industrial relations for Kodak Research Laboratories. He originally joined the company in 1963 as a senior scientist in the Applied Photography Division, Kodak Research Laboratories. He earned his bachelor's degree from St. Michael's College and his Ph.D. in physical chemistry from Northwestern University.
