Book fair scheduled

This year's annual book fair hosted by the Friends of the Libraries will offer more than 50 exhibitors from the northeastern United States and southern Canada who will sell rare and out-of-print books, maps, prints, and other unusual items from many fields. Proceeds benefit the University libraries.

The fair will be held on Saturday, September 23, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the New York State Armory, 145 Culver Road, between Monroe and Park Avenues off I-490. There's an admission charge of $5 for those who aren't Friends members or students. Parking is free on armory grounds. Lunch and snacks will be available.

During the day, visitors can bid on a silent auction of fine books, artwork, maps, prints, and other unusual collectibles. At the Friends' book booth, thousands of used books will be on sale.

Additional support for the book fair has been provided by the University of Rochester Press/Boydell & Brewer, Inc. For more information, check the Web site at www.lib.rochester.edu/friends/bookfair.htm or call x5-4461.

Gussow exhibits at Hartnett

Rochester artist Jill Gussow explores the nature of questioning, identification, and descriptive categories in her exhibit Twenty Questions: Animal, Vegetable, or Mineral at the Hartnett Gallery in Wilson Commons on the River Campus. The exhibit is on display through Sunday, October 1.

Gussow's exhibit plays with the confusion of classifications. By layering biomorphic shapes, abstract patterns, saturated surreal colors, and eclectic materials such as silk scarves, the works combine painting, drawing, and photography to create dreamlike images that seem almost recognizable yet remain elusive.

Gussow has taught photography, design, and painting at a number of local schools and organizations, and has exhibited her work across the country and in an invitational art show in Sao Paulo, Brazil. She has received numerous awards, including the Memorial Art Gallery Award for the 1985 Rochester-Finger Lakes Exhibition.

Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, and noon to 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

MAG hosts Print Fair

The fifth annual Rochester Print Fair will be held at the Memorial Art Gallery's Cutler Union on Saturday, September 16, noon-5 p.m., and Sunday, September 17, noon-3 p.m.

Internationally known print dealers from the United States and Canada will be present, including such local dealers as Deborah Ronnen Fine Arts and the East West Gallery, plus the Print Club of Rochester.

Attendees can browse through fine art prints, discover the best ways to store and frame artwork, or bring a print to the appraisal workshop (open on Sunday, 10 a.m.-noon, with a limit of three prints per person). A printmaking workshop also will be held on Saturday; call the gallery, x5-3081, ext. 3035, for times.

Admission is $5 and includes both days of the Print Fair, plus printmaking and appraisal workshops. For more information call x5-3081, ext. 3032 or ext. 3020.
