Keep fit at River Campus facilities

The Department of Athletics and Recreation offers a variety of services to full-time students and members of the R Club. To use the facilities at the newly renovated Robert B. Goergen Athletic Center, faculty and staff must become R Club members, and all users must present a valid University ID card at the front desk. (For more information about R Club and its levels of membership, log on to www.cc.rochester.edu:80/student-srvcs/sports/facilities/sportsClub.html.) Among the facilities open to full-time students and R Club members are the following:

  • Edmund A. Hajim Alumni Gymnasium--includes a new 10,000-square-foot state-of-the-art fitness/weight facility
  • Alexander Palestra--includes an enlarged basketball court that meets NCAA Division III standards
  • Speegle-Wilbraham Aquatic Center--includes a 25-yard-by-25-meter pool and diving well
  • Zornow Center--encompasses a newly repainted Field House, a 200-meter indoor running track, four tennis courts, five international-size squash courts, two racquetball/handball courts, a small aerobics studio, and three combination basketball/volleyball courts
  • Fauver Stadium--includes a lighted AstroTurf playing surface and a 400-meter running track
  • Lyman Tennis Center (located adjacent to Hill Court resident halls)--includes six lighted outdoor tennis courts
  • Graduate Living Center Complex--includes a multipurpose field, two softball fields, and a state-of-the-art throwing area for track and field events

In addition, nearby Genesee Valley Park features two 18-hole golf courses, recreational playing fields, an indoor ice-skating rink, and several paved jogging trails.

Basketballs, volleyballs, footballs, and soccer balls are available for rental at the athletic center's front desk. Softball and volleyball equipment also is available for group use only and must be reserved by calling x3-3629 in advance. Tennis and racquetball courts must be reserved one day in advance by calling Central Issue, x3-3629. Members are allowed to bring guests; passes can be purchased for $3 (students) or $5 (R Club members).

Students and R Club members also are encouraged to participate in a wide variety of club and intramural sports. Recognized club sports may compete against club teams from other universities. Contact George Wunder, x5-4302, for information. The intramural sports program offers eight team sports with open (any male or female may participate) and co-rec (requires two females on the playing surface at all times) leagues available. Contact Mike Pilger, x5-5630, for information. Instructional aerobics and Red Cross certification programs also are available for a fee. To register call Julie Benker, x5-4883.
