Sesquicentennial offers special events

Sesquicentennial Weekend, October 12-15, will include an array of special events to celebrate the University's 150th anniversary, and students--along with faculty, staff, and alumni--are invited to join in the celebration.

Students will be able to register for events, either online or in person, during the first few weeks after they return to campus. More information will be available at that time. The registration deadline is Friday, September 15, and early registration is encouraged. The registration fee is waived for students.

Weekend events have been planned to appeal to a wide variety of interests. For those fascinated with Hollywood, for example, there will be opportunities to sit in on a class with actor Robert Duvall and to join Duvall and a number of other entertainment-industry insiders for a look at the worlds of art, technology, business, and politics from both sides of the camera. Other programs will spotlight some of the nation's top health specialists, Wall Street money managers, computer experts, and authorities on space exploration.

Among other Sesquicentennial Weekend programs will be the dedication of the Robert B. Goergen Athletic Center, plus a celebration of 150 years of sports at Rochester. Other sports events include the homecoming football game and the Stonehurst Capital Invitational Regatta.

A varied menu of musical events will feature such performers as the Gap Mangione Big Band, the Eastman Jazz Ensemble, the New Jazz Ensemble, the Yellowjackets, and the Skycoasters. Nik and the Nice Guys will play at the 150th Gala Dinner at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center, an event to be headlined by entertainer Mark Russell, who will be taking a look at the lighter side of politics.

This year's Family Weekend will be another special feature of Sesquicentennial Weekend. The parents' reception on Friday, October 13, is open to parents of current undergraduates, who will join Thomas LeBlanc, Robert L. and Mary L. Sproull Dean of the College Faculty; Paul Burgett, vice president and University dean of students; and William Scott Green, dean of the College, for a Family Weekend kick-off. The parents' luncheon on Saturday, October 14, will be hosted by the deans for freshmen and sophomores. Families and friends also will be able to participate in other Sesquicentennial events.
