Athletic center, campus get facelifts

PASSAGEWAY OF PRIDE--The new two-story entryway to the Robert B. Goergen Athletic Center is bordered by display cases that lead to the "Hall of Fame," which recognizes the athletes who have made history at Rochester and displays University sports memorabilia.
hen students return at the end of August, they will notice a number of improvements on the River Campus. At the top of the list is the completion of the last phase of renovations for the new Robert B. Goergen Athletic Center. This includes the training room, the conference room, the lounge, the glass wall at the pool gallery, the ventilation system for the pool, and reconfigured tennis courts. The Palestra work, including the lengthened court to meet NCAA Division III standards, will be complete by mid-September.
Other renovation projects that have been completed over the summer include:
- The field surface, drainage, and track at Fauver Stadium.
- Dandelion Square site and landscape improvements between the Goergen Center and Wilson Commons.
- Paving bricks and waterproofing for Meliora Plaza.
- Sidewalk, lighting, and landscaping for the Fraternity Quadrangle.
- The Dean of Students Office has moved into a renovated space on the fifth floor of Wilson Commons.
- The Office of Minority Student Affairs has moved to the third floor of Morey Hall.
- The tower of Rush Rhees Library has new windows.
- The Great Hall in Rush Rhees Library has new lighting, flooring, painting, and furnishings. In September, display cases plus an area carpet will be installed. (To find out more about the Great Hall, see Major gift propels library renovation.)
In addition, construction has started on Gleason Hall, the addition to the Simon School's Schlegel Hall. Hutchison Road is closed to through traffic to allow for safe pedestrian crossing, and the walkway by Dewey Lot has been relocated. Construction is scheduled to be complete by July 2001.
