Justin Berrie '02, a student at the College and the Eastman School, won second place at the 14th Flute Talk Competition held in April at Northwestern University. Berrie performed the Joan Tower Concerto for Flute and Orchestra.

The June issue of Down Beat magazine featured its 23rd annual student music award winners, including the Eastman Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Fred Sturm. The ensemble was one of three co-winners in the college-level "jazz big band" category.

Fourteen Rochester undergraduates were selected this spring as the first recipients of the Simon Scholar award program, which links the Simon School with outstanding undergraduates on campus. Simon Scholars are guaranteed acceptance into the school's two-year full-time M.B.A. program after a minimum of two years' employment following their undergraduate commencement. They also are guaranteed a $9,000 annual scholarship. The following students were chosen to receive the award: Arjun Dutt, '00, electrical engineering; Frank Georges, '00, chemistry; Jonathan Goldstein, '00, economics/political science; Laurie Griesinger, '00, health and society; Jesse Hallowitz, '00, economics/Spanish; Nihar Mehta, '00, economics; James Murphy, '00, economics; Bradley Raphael, '00, economics; Roa Samir, '00, economics; Joseph Brennan, '01, economics; Zhao Ming Kuang, '01, economics; Alan McDaniel, '01, brain and cognitive sciences; Mukul Seth, '01, electrical engineering; and Vincent Christopher, '02, undeclared.

Julien Groues '00, who completed his M.B.A. in June, was selected as the second recipient of the ITEC Scholarship award. This honor, presented in conjunction with the two-day Information Technology Exposition and Conference (ITEC) held locally, recognizes students who demonstrate a high degree of academic excellence and leadership in the information technology field.
