Anthony Center honors women Feb. 8

The theme of the Susan B. Anthony Legacy Dinner on Thursday, February 8, will be "Women at the University of Rochester--The Next Hundred Years."

Sponsored by the Susan B. Anthony Center for Women's Leadership and the University Women's Club, the annual dinner celebrates the suffragist's birthday and her two-year campaign to win women admission to the University. The evening features presentation of the Center's Lifetime Achievement Award and scholarships from the University Women's Club.

Deborah Cory-Slechta, dean for research at the School of Medicine and Dentistry, will be the speaker. Cory-Slechta is one of the first two women to be named dean or senior associate dean in the medical school's 75-year history.

Barbara Iglewski and Elizabeth McAnarney will be honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award. McAnarney is chair of the Department of Pediatrics at the Medical Center and pediatrician-in-chief at Children's Hospital at Strong. Iglewski is chair of microbiology and immunology at the Medical Center.

Mary-Beth Cooper, associate vice president and River Campus dean of students, is moderator for the program, which includes a performance by Vocal Point, the University's all-female a cappella group.

The dinner is open to the public and will be held at 6 p.m. in the May Room of Wilson Commons on the River Campus.

Several women students also will be honored for their accomplishments and contributions to University life. Two students will receive awards sponsored by the University Women's Club: Claudia Gutierrez '02 is the recipient of the Susan B. Anthony Scholarship, and Awista Ayub '01 is the recipient of the Susan B. Anthony Prize.

Other student award winners include Elizabeth Fox '02, who will be presented the Fanny R. Bigelow Scholarship, and Candace Curran '03, who will receive the Jane R. Plitt Scholarship.

Tickets to the dinner are $22 and can be ordered by calling Jennifer Steward at x5-8799 by February 1.
