United Way 2001 offers sweepstakes

In an effort to reach a record $1 million goal, the University's 2001 United Way campaign is joining a sweepstakes competition featuring new automobiles, a year's supply of groceries, and other prizes.

The campaign also has begun a new initiative designed to ensure that every dollar donated by University employees goes to the programs targeted for funding.

Both incentives are intended to increase participation among employees and to reassure them that their donation is reaching the people they had in mind, according to Lenora Colaruotolo, coordinator of United Way programs at the University.

The campaign, which kicked off February 13, continues through March 23 and has for the first time set a goal of raising more than $1 million. Last year's campaign raised $715,000.

All University employees will receive packets outlining the campaign and donation options.

The new donor-assurance program is called Every Dollar Gets Empowered (EDGE) and takes advantage of United Way of Greater Rochester's ability to keep its operating expenses low.

In 2000, the Rochester campaign had the most efficient operating expense level in the country at 8 percent, meaning 92 percent of donor dollars went to the targeted programs.

United Way has promised to use earnings from its Community Endowment Fund to cover operating expenses for gifts to the University's 2001 campaign, assuring that the campaign's gift total will be 100 percent, Colaruotolo says.

"No donor dollars will be spent on operations," she says.

University employees who watch the United Way video will receive coupons to enter the sweepstakes, which is sponsored by United Way of Greater Rochester.

The five grand prizes include a 2002 Cadillac Escalade, Buick Rendezvous, Oldsmobile Bravada, GMC Envoy, and Chevrolet Trail Blazer, donated by General Motors

Two first prizes include free groceries for a year, valued at up to $5,000 each, donated by Wegmans.

Five second prizes include two trips for two to Cancun, Mexico, including roundtrip airfare and deluxe lodging accommodations for five nights, donated by AAA; two five-day, four-night trips for two to Los Angeles, including roundtrip airfare, lodging, Warner Bros. Studio Tour tickets, and $200 spending cash; or one three-day, two-night trip to New York City, including roundtrip airfare, lodging, television audience tickets, and $200 spending cash

Five third prizes include a computer, monitor, keyboard, and Windows Millennium Edition, donated by Brite Computers; and a Kodak DC4800 Digital Camera, donated by Eastman Kodak Company.
