MAG opens exhibit on noted Maine artist
Neil Welliver: The Prints runs through June 3. For three decades, Welliver has captured the beauty of northern Maine in paintings that critic Robert Hughes calls "among the strongest images in modern American art." A former teacher at Yale University and the University of Pennsylvania, Welliver has worked for the past 30 years from a farm near Lincolnville, Maine, building a reputation as one of the nation's most important contemporary painters. His oil painting Dead Pine is on display in the gallery's New Acquisitions for a New Millennium exhibition. Welliver will give a lecture on his work at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 25, at the gallery. The talk is free with admission to MAG.
