In BriefPoet Wakefield reads March 28Noted author and poet Kathleen Wakefield will discuss her work at noon Wednesday, March 28, in the Welles-Brown Room in Rush Rhees Library. Wakefield's lecture is part of the 39th season of the Hyam Plutzik Memorial Poetry Series and is presented in conjunction with the Donald R. Clark Enrichment Program in the Humanities. Wakefield's recent publication, Notations on the Visible World, won the 1999 Anhinga Prize for Poetry. Her work, There and Back, received the 1992 State Street Press Poetry Chapbook Competition. Spring Vacation Camp offeredUniversity employees looking for care for school-age children during spring break are reminded that the Family Care Program is sponsoring Vacation Club for children ages 5-12. The program, operated by Camp Fire Boys and Girls, will be held from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. April 16-20 on the River Campus. There is a $100 weekly program fee and $25 weekly registration fee. Race and gender discussedMichele Simms-Burton, assistant professor of English in the College, will discuss "Women Writers and the Black Arts Movement: The Intersection of Race and Gender" at 2 p.m. Friday, March 23, in 540 Lattimore Hall on the River Campus. The research seminar presentation, which is free and open to the public, examines historical evidence that African-American women writers occupied a central place in the Black Arts Movement. Ideas for noncredit courses soughtStaff and faculty who have a skill, a hobby, or a passion for a specific area of knowledge they have always wanted to share with others are invited to propose a noncredit lecture, workshop, or course that would be offered through the College's Office of Special Programs. The office is seeking to expand its range of noncredit offerings in order to attract more members of the Rochester community to the University. Those making a proposal may indicate a specific target group, such as retirees, teenagers, singles, parents, teachers, or others. Disability studies talk setLennard J. Davis, chair of the Department of English and professor of disability studies and human development at the University of Illinois at Chicago, will present the lecture "The Withering Away of the Disability State: A Possible Future for Disability Studies" at 4 p.m., Tuesday, April 3, in the Gamble Room of Rush Rhees Library. The lecture, which is free, is one in a series on the topic of understanding disability and its place in the study of the humanities. The series is sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities and co-sponsored by the Margaret Warner Graduate School of Education and Human Development and the Susan B. April 26 is day for kids at workThe annual "Take Your Children To Work Day" is set for Thursday, April 26. Sponsored by the Medical Center Administrative Group (MCAG), the day's events are scheduled from 8 a.m. to noon and include juice and donuts at registration for all participating children. Children also will receive a bag of surprises at the end of the morning activities. Registration is limited to 200 participants and will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis. Web portals discussed April 5Technology experts from Princeton University, the University of Delaware, and SUNY Buffalo will discuss the use of "portals" as a way of designing and presenting information about universities on the World Wide Web during a panel discussion from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, April 5, in the May Room of Wilson Commons. "Looking Into the Future: All the Elements of a Successful Campus Portal" features presentations by Carl Jacobsen, director of management information systems at Delaware, Jim Gorman and Robert Wright, information technology managers at Buffalo, and David Koehler, director of information systems at Princeton. MAG hosts tech gatheringAn organization dedicated to involving young professionals in the work of the Memorial Art Gallery is teaming up with a network of 1,300 technology professionals to host a "networking event" at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 21, at the gallery. The Memorial Art Gallery's Young Friends of MAG and Digital Rochester are organizing the event, "ART@MAG," as part of a city-wide effort to attract and retain young professionals in the Rochester area. Research participants neededFlu--The Vaccine and Treatment Evaluation Unit is seeking volunteers for a research study on the flu.
