Youngsters+summer=science camps
everal University departments are offering summer camps in sciences and other fields for middle and high school students beginning this July.
Deadlines for application are approaching.
A sampling of camps:
- Math, Science, and Computer Camp for Girls (Margaret Warner Graduate School of Education and Human Development): Session I for 12- to 14-year-olds runs from July 9 to July 20; session II for 9- to 11-year-olds runs from July 23 to August 3. Contact Edith Kort, 377-6862.
- Science Explorations Camp (Department of Environmental Medicine): For students entering grades 7 through 9, the sessions run July 30 to August 3, and from August 6 through August 10. Cost is $200. Contact Dina Markowitz, x5-3171.
- The Pre-College Experience in Physics for Young Women in High School (Department of Physics and Astronomy): Designed for current 9th- and 10th-graders, the program runs from July 5 through July 27. The program is free. Application deadline is March 31. Contact Priscilla Auchincloss, x5-9344.
- Laboratory for Laser Energetics High School Summer Program: Up to 10 high school students completing the junior year are selected to work closely with engineers and scientists on projects in optics and fusion. The program runs July 9 and ends August 29. Students work 40 hours each week and receive $5.25 per hour. Application deadline is March 23. Contact Stephen Craxton, x5-5467.
- Summer Science Academy (Department of Environmental Medicine): Designed for students currently in 9th, 10th, or 11th grade (and who have taken high school biology), the sessions run from July 9 through July 20. Cost is $450. Application deadline is May 1. Contact Dina Markowitz, x5-3171.
- Rochester Scholars Summer Program (Office of Special Programs): A two-week program for high school students. Cost per course is about $295 which includes course-related expenses. Call x5-2744.
