MEMORIAL ART GALLERY EVENTS

April 17--Lecture. Sydney Greaves, Memorial Art Gallery docent and Creative Workshop art history instructor, speaks on "Connoisseurs and Curiosities: The American Museum." Presented in conjunction with National Volunteer Month. Free with gallery admission (admission free to volunteers at area cultural organizations). Auditorium, 7:30 p.m.

April 20, 27--Preschool Family Workshop. For children ages 2-1/2 to 5 with an adult. Participants view works from the gallery's permanent collection, followed by a discussion and a chance to make their own inspired masterpieces. Fee/registration required. Creative Workshop, 10:30 a.m.-noon. Call the gallery at ext. 3056 to register.

April 20, 27--Jazz Fridays at the MAG. Start the weekend at the gallery with live jazz and extended exhibition hours. Bob Stata Trio performs April 20. On April 27, the season finale features the Fred Costello Trio. Admission charge; free to gallery members and students with University ID. Pavilion, 6 p.m.-8:30 p.m.

April 21--Preview Party: 58th Rochester-Finger Lakes Exhibition. Program includes rockabilly by Krypton 88, world beat jazz by the Steve Copeland Group, light classical fare by the Eastman String Quartet, and a cappella selections by Vocal Point, Charivari, and the Midnight Ramblers. Tickets are $15 (MAG members free). Reservations required; for tickets, call the gallery at ext. 3510. Nonmember tickets are also available at local Starbucks Coffee stores and Parkleigh. 8 p.m.-midnight.

April 22--Free Admission Day. For the opening day of the 58th Rochester-Finger Lakes Exhibition, enjoy free admission, a free lecture, and a free exhibition tour. Gallery hours: noon-5 p.m. Guided tours: 1 p.m., 3 p.m., 4 p.m.

April 22--Lecture. Stephen Bennett Phillips, one of the jurors for this year's Rochester-Finger Lakes Exhibition, speaks on his selections for the show. Phillips is associate curator at The Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C. Admission is free. Auditorium, 2 p.m.

April 24--Exhibition Walkthroughs. Memorial Art Gallery staff and docents introduce the paintings in the 58th Rochester-Finger Lakes Exhibition. Free with gallery admission. 6 p.m., 7 p.m., 8 p.m.

April 29--Sunday Fundays. "Contemporary Art on Parade." The family-friendly celebration includes music and dance performances, tours of the 58th Rochester-Finger Lakes Exhibition, demonstrations, and a make-it-and-take-it workshop. Admission charge; free to gallery members and children five and under. Noon-5 p.m.

April 22-June 24--58th Rochester-Finger Lakes Exhibition. First presented in 1938, the biennial exhibition showcases area talent in painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, ceramics, and other media.

Through June 3--Neil Welliver: The Prints. Included are some two dozen woodcuts, serigraphs, lithographs, and etchings by the noted Maine-based artist.

Through 2001--About Face: Copley's Portrait of a Colonial Silversmith. In this interactive installation families can learn about John Singleton Copley, the most famous portrait painter in Colonial America, and his friend, silversmith Nathaniel Hurd. Dorothy McBride Gill Education Center.

Long-term installation--New Acquisitions for a New Millennium. Showcases 21 masterworks acquired during the last four years.

April 22--The Holocaust. Panelists include an Auschwitz guide who is visiting Rochester; William Scott Green, dean of the College and professor of religion and classics; and Celia Applegate, associate professor of history.

April 29--Saving Our Kids: An Inside Look at the Mt. Hope Family Center. Features a panel of experts, including representatives from the University's Mt. Hope Family Center.
