In BriefGardner fiancée readsSusan Thornton, author and fiancée of the late novelist John Gardner, will read from her book On Broken Glass: Loving and Losing John Gardner. The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 18, in the Welles-Brown Room in Rush Rhees Library. Gardner--whose personal and professional papers are part of the collection at Rush Rhees Library's Department of Rare Books, Special Collections, and Preservation--was known for his works such as Grendel, The Sunlight Dialogues, and Mickelsson's Ghost. He also taught at universities around the country and wrote poetry, biography, scholarship, short stories, and a textbook. Thornton's book follows her relationship with Gardner as a student, lover, and finally, as a fiancée, including his decline into alcoholism before his death in 1982. Less than a week before their marriage was to take place, Gardner was killed in a motorcycle accident. The reading is sponsored by the Department of Rare Books, Special Collections, and Preservation. Reading features poet HillAuthor and poet Geoffrey Hill will read from his work at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 19, in the Interfaith Chapel on the River Campus. The event is part of the 39th season of the Hyam Plutzik Memorial Poetry Series and is presented in conjunction with the Donald R. Clark Enrichment Program in the Humanities. Hill's collections of poetry include Somewhere Is Such a Kingdom, Tenebrae, New and Collected Poems 1952-1992, Canaan, and The Triumph of Love. Hill's most recent work, a book-length poem titled Speech! Speech!, will be published later this year. Hill currently is a professor of literature and religion at Boston University. Yellowjackets bid 'Farewell'The Yellowjackets, one of the University's all-male a cappella groups, will give a performance at 8 p.m. Sunday, April 22, in Strong Auditorium on the River Campus. Titled "Yellowjackets Senior Farewell," the performance pays tribute to graduating seniors Jordan Pique, Ben Jacoby, and Will Jennings. Health care effects discussedAndrew Jameton, philosopher and professor of preventive and societal medicine at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, will discuss the environmental effects of health care during this year's Lyon Daughters Lecture at 8 p.m. Friday, April 27, at the Rochester Academy of Medicine, 1441 East Ave. Jameton's lecture, "Health Care: At What Environmental Cost," is free and open to the public with seating on a first-come, first-served basis. The Lyon Daughters Lecture series was created 10 years ago by Allis Van Voorhis D'Amanda, the granddaughter of University alumnus Edmund Lyon. Lyon, who graduated from the University in 1877, was a noted Rochester inventor, humanitarian, philanthropist, and manufacturer. 'Show Business' goes onThe student musical theater group Off Broadway Off Campus will present its spring revue titled No Business Like Show Business at 8 p.m. Friday, April 27, in lower Strong Auditorium on the River Campus. The performance will include numbers from Broadway shows Annie Get Your Gun, Cabaret, Side Show, and Sunday in the Park with George, and from movies such as Fame. All numbers have been selected and choreographed by the student members. Tickets are $3 for students and faculty and $4 for the general public and are available at the Common Market in Wilson Commons as well as at the door. Comedian performs April 22Comedian Suzanne Westenhoefer will perform at 8 p.m. Sunday, April 22, in the May Room of Wilson Commons. Westenhoefer has received two Gay and Lesbian American Music Awards for her best-selling compact discs "Nothing in My Closet But My Clothes" and "I'm Not Cindy Brady" as well as a GLAAD media award nomination for her work in theatrical production. She currently is working on an HBO special titled "Tour de Femme!" The performance is sponsored by the Gay, Lesbian, Bi-sexual, and Friends Association. Admission is $3 for University students and $5 for the general public.
