RE:	New area code

On April 5, the Greater Rochester area learned that a new area code--585--would replace the existing 716 area code.

Present plans indicate that customers may begin using the new code 585 on November 15. At that time, those remaining in the redefined 716 area will begin using 1+10 digits to reach customers in the new 585 area code, and vice versa.

Due to the area code change to 585, each department should plan to do the following, with the November 15 activation date in mind:

* Change stationery, business cards, and advertising to reflect the correct area code.

* Update fax machine group calling lists.

* Reprogram speed dialers, auto dialers, alarms, and private phone systems.

* Reprogram "out-dial" lists on affected computers.

* Update or reprogram "private-dial" entry access systems.

The new area code 585 will include Orleans, Genesee, Wyoming, Monroe, and Livingston counties. Those portions of Allegany, Ontario, Yates, and Steuben counties presently served by the 716 area code also will be included in the 585 area code.
