Prestigious academies induct faculty

Several members of the University faculty were named to prestigious academic societies in end-of-the-year honors.

Elected to the National Academy of Sciences were:

  • Ronald Jones, Xerox Professor of Economics and chairman of the economics department. Jones is an international trade theorist who has developed major theoretical frameworks and provided treatment of the effects of protection on international capital movements. He has been at the University since 1958.

  • René Millon, professor emeritus of anthropology. He was recognized for his work mapping and excavating Teotihuacán, Mexico. He taught at the University from 1961 to 1986.

  • Leonard Mandel, the late Lee A. DuBridge Professor Emeritus of Physics and Optics. One of the world's leading physicists, Mandel, who died earlier this year, pioneered the branch of physics known as quantum optics. He was elected posthumously.

    Elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences were:

  • Elissa Newport, chair of the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences and George Eastman Professor of Brain and Cognitive Sciences. A professor at the University since 1988, Newport studies the acquisition of language and the relationship between language acquisition and language structure.

  • Joanna Scott, Roswell S. Burrows Professor of English. She is the critically acclaimed author of five novels, including Make Believe, which was published last year.

    Also, Professor of Surgery Seymour Schwartz was elected to the American Philosophical Society.
