Service hours show students CARE

University students contributed almost 3,000 hours of community service during the spring semester as part of the Children Are Rochester's Excellence (CARE) initiative, surpassing the goal of 2,001 volunteer hours.

CARE, a project of the school's Community Service Network, supports programs for children and youth in the community.

Tiernan Hall led the workers with more than 700 hours of service. The University's Peace's Conflict Resolution Program at Nathaniel Rochester Elementary School provided more than 250 hours of service. Students volunteering through CSN with Child, Inc., the Little Buddies Program at Baden Street Settlement, Habitat for Humanity, KATS, and Partners in Reading at School 33, devoted more than 500 hours. The Charles Drew Pre-Health Society spent 170 hours mentoring middle school-aged youth, and the University's Women in Science program sponsored a science day for sixth-grade girls.

The School of Medicine and Dentistry's Class of 2004 contributed more than 320 hours by working with children and adults at Sojourner House, Bethany House, and in a variety of tutoring and service programs. The Spanish and Latin Student Association, worked with Puerto Rican Youth Development for 90 hours of tutoring assistance at local high schools.
