July 10, 17, 6:30 p.m. Through July 31--Rochester Art Club Juried Exhibition. Every three years, the Memorial Art Gallery hosts the Rochester Art Club's annual juried exhibition. The show features works in all media by members of the club, which is one of the country's oldest. Long-term installations Through 2001--New Acquisitions for a New Millennium. Showcases 21 masterworks acquired during the last four years, including one of the most significant acquisitions in Gallery history--the inner coffin of Pa-debehu-Aset, an Egyptian official of the 4th century BCE. Through 2002--About Face: Copley's Portrait of a Colonial Silversmith. An interactive installation about Colonial American portrait painter John Singleton Copley and silversmith Nathaniel Hurd. The Eastman jazz guitarist's concert features music from his latest CD, Out of the Darkness, and other jazz and popular standards. Joining him are local musicians Tony Padilla (Latin percussion), Bob Stata (bass), Mike Melito (drums), Josh Rutner (saxophone), and Paul Hofmann (piano). July 4--Fourth of July Fluteworks! Eastman CED flutist Sophia Gibbs-Kim and friends present a special one-hour concert to celebrate our nation's birthday. The program features Serenade by Eastman's legendary director Howard Hanson, Robert Beaser's Mountain Songs for flute and guitar, Lowell Liebermann's Sonata for Flute and Piano, Katherine Hoover's Kokopeli, and Three American Pieces by Lukas Foss. The Fourth of July celebration culminates with a patriotic encore--featuring the music of John Phillip Sousa. July 5--Wesley Nance and Megumi Kanda. CED and Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra trumpeter Wesley Nance presents an evening of brass music, featuring several of his Eastman and RPO colleagues--including Megumi Kanda on trombone. July 9--Mitzie Collins and Friends: World Music. CED's Mitzie Collins presents her annual world music extravaganza. Features this year include Rochester trio Stone Soup, which draws from Bulgarian, Appalachian, and Irish musical influences. The program will also include Russian classical and folk music, Scottish pipe music, African-American choir music, and Native American song and dance. July 11--Gene Bertoncini.* Jazz guitarist Gene Bertoncini returns for his annual summer concert. July 15--Jeremy Zhu and Howard Spindler. CED faculty violinist Jeremy Zhu teams up with CED Interim Director Howard Spindler (piano) for a Sunday afternoon concert featuring the music of Mozart, Fauré, Kreisler, and Prokofiev. Kilbourn Hall, 3 p.m. July 16--Petar Kodzas. CED faculty guitarist Petar Kodzas--with the help of soprano Pamela Kurau, other CED colleagues, and WXXI's Mordecai Lipshutz--presents an all-Schubert concert in the spirit of a 19th century soirée. July 18--Carolyn Triozzi. CED and Rochester-area flutist and educator Carolyn Triozzi, accompanied by pianist Kevin Lieb, performs music for flute and piano by Jolivet, Franck, and Thea Musgrave. July 19--Tara Noval. Violinist Tara Noval--Rochester native who will perform with the Philadelphia Orchestra this summer--presents a concert called the Virtuoso Violin. Accompanied by her mother, Pittsford resident Barbara Noval, she performs the music of Bach, Bartók, Chausson, and others. Summer Sings--A series of choral music reading sessions. Open to singers of all ages and abilities. Free and open to the public (a $5 donation is suggested). Scores and refreshments are provided, and parking is free in the East End Garage. Ellen Espenschied, director of the Yale Freshman Chorus, performs the opening concert with recent Yale graduate Roy Lee.
