Reminder: New area code coming

The changeover to a new area code will begin this fall and continue through May 2003 as a three-phase process. Outlined below are the details and important dates associated with each phase.

Phase I-Permissive Dialing begins November 15, 2001. Permissive means that either the "716" or "585" area code can be dialed.

Phase II-Mandatory with Intercept phase begins August 17, 2002. This phase marks the beginning of major systems and communications work. During Phase II, the "585" area code must be dialed for the appropriate areas. If "716" is dialed, the caller will receive an intercept recording announcing the area code change.

Phase III-Beginning May 16, 2003, the caller will no longer receive an intercept recording.
