Neilly Series books eclectic lineup
The series is supported by a major gift from Andrew H. Neilly '47 and his wife, Janet Dayton Neilly, of Weston, Conn. Income from this new endowment will fund eight lectures in 2001-02. Events will be held at 4 p.m. in the Welles-Brown Room of Rush Rhees Library and are free and open to the public. The first of its kind produced and supported solely by University libraries, the series begins Wednesday, September 19, with a lecture by Joan Shelley Rubin, professor of history, known for her research on American cultural and intellectual history. Using a 1950s literary controversy involving poet John Ciardi, Rubin will develop themes from her larger research on the practices and values governing Americans' use of poetry. The fall and spring series lineup promises an eclectic mix of speakers: essayist and bibliophile Nicholas Basbanes on September 28; journalist and biographer Richard Ben Cramer on October 12; Lawrence Ashmead '54, '58 (MS), vice president and executive editor at Harper Collins, on November 7; Eastman School of Music's David Headlam on January 24; Sylvia Nasar, journalist and biographer, on February 26; historian and mystery writer Miriam Grace Monfredo on March 13; and the series' final speaker Mark Cuddy, artistic director of Rochester's Geva Theatre, on Wednesday, April 3.
