'Twisted' exhibition examines DNAAlong the Strand, an exhibition by artist Pat Bacon, examines the complexity of the human genome project and DNA research and the effects of both on everyday life. The exhibition opens Monday, September 10, and continues through October 7, in Wilson Commons' Hartnett Gallery on the River Campus. An opening reception will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday, September 12, with Bacon giving an artist's talk at 6 p.m. that evening. Bacon is best known for her collage work based on original photographs and employing various materials from silk to recycled copier paper. She has exhibited in New York and Philadelphia and is the recipient of a New York State Foundation for the Arts Fellowship, a Mid-Atlantic Individual Artist Fellowship, and a Constance Saltonstall Photograph Fellowship. Her work can be seen in the recent book from Focal Press, Photographic Possibilities, by Robert Hirsch and John Valentina. Bacon teaches at Sodus Central School and lives in Lyons. "My work is a direct result of how I internalize complex information delivered non-stop in the media, contrasted by the world I live in," says Bacon. "The work itself reminds me of the child's game of 'gossip,' where information goes from one child to the next, each distilling the text. The game is up when the product is exposed to the world as subjectively altered." Exhibition hours are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and noon to 6 p.m. on weekends. For information, call Wilson Commons Information Desk, x5-5911.
