September 11--Woven Passion: Textile Nourishment for the Soul. Roger Cavanna, a respected authority on oriental rugs, presents the lecture in conjunction with an exhibition of rugs from his collection. Free with gallery admission, 7:30 p.m.

September 18--Panel Discussion. Artists Andrea Gill, John Gill and Anne Currier speak about their work in the field of ceramic arts. Free with gallery admission, 7:30 p.m.

September 21--Preschool Family Workshop. Weekly thematic workshops where adults and children can enjoy story reading, gallery tour, and art projects. The workshops continue through November. Admission fee and registration required, 10:30-noon.

ONGOING EXHIBITS AND TOURS

At Memorial Art Gallery

Through October 7--Color and Fire: Defining Moments in Studio Ceramics 1950-2000. This collection from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art presents 200 vessel forms and large-scale sculptures by internationally acclaimed artists Robert Arneson, Adrian Saxe, Wayne Higby, Gertrud and Otto Natzler, and John and Andrea Gill. From its roots in pure functionalism to the modern emphasis on concept over craft, the exhibition is a visual journey through the last 50 years of ceramic history.

Long-term installations

Through 2001--New Acquisitions for a New Millennium. Showcases 21 masterworks acquired during the last four years, including one of the most significant acquisitions in gallery history--the Inner Coffin of Pa-debehu-Aset, an Egyptian official of the 4th century BCE.

Through 2002--About Face: Copley's Portrait of a Colonial Silversmith. An interactive installation about Colonial American portrait painter John Singleton Copley and silversmith Nathaniel Hurd. Dorothy McBride Gill Education Center.

September 10-October 7--Along the Strand. Features the works of artist Pat Bacon who attempts to make sense of the human genome project and the effects of DNA research on everyday life. Free and open to the public.

September 12--Opening Reception. Pat Bacon gives an artist's talk. Hartnett Gallery, 5-7 p.m.

At Rush Rhees Library

September 19--The Neilly Series: Joan Shelley Rubin. Known for her research on American cultural and intellectual history, Rubin discusses the controversy between John Ciardi, poetry editor of the Saturday Review, in the 1950s, and his readers after Ciardi attacked the poetry of Anne Morrow Lindbergh, wife of Charles Lindbergh. This lecture is part of a larger area of research that Rubin is involved in concerning American readers' uses of poetry. Welles Brown Room, 4 p.m.

Through September 28--The Man who Purchased Alaska: William Henry Seward's 200th Birthday. The exhibition displays correspondence from Seward and his political contemporaries, including President Lincoln's letter to Seward offering him the position of secretary of state. Also shown is a dramatic entry in the diary kept by Seward's daughter, Fanny, describing in detail the attempt on her father's life the same night that Lincoln was assassinated. Monday through Friday in the Department of Rare Books, Special Collections, and Preservation, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For details call x5-4477.
