Meliora Weekend registration begins

Meliora Weekend--which combines Reunion, Homecoming, Family Weekend, and Stonehurst Regatta--is the College's new fall tradition, created to capture and continue the spirit of last year's Sesquicentennial Weekend. Each year, in mid-October, College alumni, parents, and friends will join faculty, staff, and students on campus for three days of celebration. Nearly 5,000 alumni, parents, students, and community members are expected to attend this year's events, held October 12-14.

Like the Sesquicentennial celebration, Meliora Weekend features programs and speakers of the highest quality. Dean of the Faculty Thomas LeBlanc has chosen a theme for the weekend to unite all programming--Freedom. Topics to be discussed by a host of internationally recognized experts include freedom of speech, financial freedom, the cost of freedom, economic freedom, freedom from illness, and loss of freedom.

Speakers include former Senator Bill Bradley (D-N.J.); former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Jeane Kirkpatrick; Deborah Oppenheimer, noted television producer and winner of the 2000 Academy Award for her Holocaust documentary, Into the Arms of Strangers; Lawrence Kudlow '69, CNBC financial advisor and member of the Bush-Cheney transition team; and Arthur Miller '56, television commentator and Harvard law professor. Of the 50 weekend speakers, 15 are College alumni and 20 are faculty--substantially more faculty speakers than last year's event and a model for future participation.

In addition, on Friday afternoon most College departments will hold open houses, some of which will feature lectures, tours, or films.

The "MelioraFest" on Saturday is the weekend's "Taste of Rochester" event, and includes Rochester foods and beverages and musical performances by Gap Mangione. The weekend activities also will include performances by Bill Cosby and Second City Comedy.
