Orientation welcomes the Class of 2005
Marcy Kraus, director of orientation and assistant dean of freshmen, worked with student volunteers, academic departments, administration, and many University employees to coordinate the programming for this year's orientation. "There are three main components to orientation: the academic, residential, and social aspects," says Kraus. "Freshmen meet with academic advisors to choose classes and prepare for registration. The new freshman housing program allows students, RAs, D'Lions, and faculty advisors to remain within the Freshman Residential Quad, instilling a sense of community and class identity. And the social aspects of making friends are encouraged through events such as the drive-in movie on the Wilson Commons lawn, Wilson Day activities and pizza party, and Baseball Night at Frontier Field." All academic departments participated in a two-day academic open house, in which representatives were available to discuss courses and program options. Many student organizations also volunteered and provided entertainment and support, including a cappella performances by the Yellowjackets, improv shows by In Between the Lines, as well as assistance from the Community Learning Center, RAs, D'Lions, and special interest student groups.
