Cancer Center appoints new director
he University Medical Center has appointed Richard Fisher as director of the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center and director of Cancer Services for Strong Health. Fisher, whose appointment is pending formal Trustee approval, is an internationally known expert in biological research and treatment of lymphoma.
"Fisher's leadership in the cancer field is internationally recognized, and he will be an asset for us as we continue to build our patient care, research, and teaching programs," says Jay Stein, senior vice president and vice provost for health affairs and Medical Center and Strong Health CEO. Fisher will oversee clinical cancer services at Strong Memorial Hospital and Highland Hospital, which together provide comprehensive care for cancer patients throughout western and Upstate New York. "I want to build a worldclass cancer research and treatment facility to provide state-of-the-art care with the newest and best treatments for patients with cancer," says Fisher. A graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Medical School, Fisher is a fomer senior investigator at the National Cancer Institute and former director of the Cardinal Bernardin Cancer Center at Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine in Chicago.
