Staff leadership classes offered

The fall session of the University Leadership Program begins Tuesday, September 25th. All University staff who are currently in a supervisory/management position as well as those on a career track to becoming a supervisor are welcome to attend.

Scheduled classes include University Overview, September 25 or October 3; University Leadership, October 9; A Day in the Life of a Supervisor, October 16 and 23; Committing to Performance, October 30; Facilitating Conflict Resolution, November 6; and Keys to Service Excellence, November 13.

Women's Club tours Kornberg Center

The University Women's Club is sponsoring a tour of the Kornberg Research Center, the Medical Center's state-of-the-art research facility, followed by a reception and dinner on Tuesday, October 16, at 5:30 p.m. Sharon Kubiak, administrative assistant to the senior vice president of Health Affairs, will provide an orientation lecture prior to the tour. Breast cancer walk makes strides

The Comprehensive Breast Care Program at the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center is organizing teams to participate in the annual "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk," on Sunday, October 14. The 5K event begins at Frontier Field and thousands of men, women, and children are expected to participate. Last year, 62 people from the Cancer Center participated, raising $6,714. Anyone interested in joining the effort, which supports breast cancer research, prevention, and education programs, should contact Leslie White at x3-1119 or Marsha Gross at x3-2005.

Lights, camera, action

Catch recent and classic films this fall in Hoyt Hall on the River Campus. Tickets are $2 at the door, or $1.75 in advance at the Common Market in Wilson Commons on the River Campus. The fall 2001 series is sponsored by the University Cinema Group. Late September and early October flicks include Pearl Harbor, Baby Boy, The Wizard of Oz, and Phantom of the Paradise.

Sleuths and writers invited

The Office of Special Programs and Part-time Studies has several new, noncredit offerings beginning in early October:

* "Document Sleuth" is an interdisciplinary course meant for anyone who has an interest in research using primary sources, research techniques, and the tools of a sleuth.

* "Rochester Church and Temple Histories: An Overlooked Genre," explores the treasures in and around Rochester by examining detailed biographies, photos of buildings long gone, as well as extant, but altered, art in many mediums, portraits of ethnic enclaves, music, and community.

* "Brainstorming and Blockbusting Tactics and Techniques for Writers," a six-hour workshop to cure difficult times for writers, fosters an understanding of right-brain techniques calculated to enhance inventiveness and productivity. Using tactics and techniques discussed in class, participants have the opportunity to develop and share their manuscripts with the class.

Symphony auditions string players

The University Symphony Orchestra, a 100-member orchestra composed of musicians from throughout the community as well as University students, still has openings for experienced violists, cellists, and bassists. Major works by Bernstein, Rachmaninoff, Gershwin, Strauss, and Tchaikovsky will highlight this season's four concerts. The orchestra is also scheduled to perform on WXXI FM's Live from Hochstein series on Wednesday, October 24. Rehearsals are Tuesday evenings from 7:30-10 p.m. in Strong Auditorium. Interested players should contact the Department of Music at x5-2828 to schedule an audition.

Alumni serve in eight cities

More than 100 alumni of the University participated at locations in eight major U.S. cities Saturday, September 15, for a day of community service that ties school spirit with helping others. Now in its third year, Wilson Day USA--named for University benefactor Joseph Wilson and his family--links graduates in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Denver, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seattle, and Washington, D.C., as they work in their communities. Plans in New York City were canceled because of the attacks at the World Trade Center. Activities were organized by the Alumni Relations and Development Office.

Medical Center offers karate

Kara, meaning empty, and te, meaning hand; karate means the art of empty hand fighting. Learn how to develop confidence and self-discipline, while improving fitness and concentration. The Medical Center Athletic Club will be offering traditional karate lessons beginning September 24 through November 12, every Monday from 6:15-7:30 p.m. Lessons are open to people age 16 and older. All classes are individualized and include belt promotions based on the Goshin Jutsu style. For more information, call x5-2437.

Research participants needed

Infertility study--Couples with unexplained infertility who have been unable to conceive for at least one year and women who have been unable to conceive through donor insemination are needed for a clomiphene/IUI research study to evaluate the difference in pregnancy rates resulting from two different methods of IUI timing. Requires women ages 18-42 with normal uterus conditions and at least one fallopian tube for this 15-week study. Clomiphene, ovulation predicator kits, and hCG will be provided free.
