MAG aids disaster relief

In response to the tragic events of September 11, the Memorial Art Gallery is sponsoring free admission days for six Tuesdays beginning September 25. In lieu of admission fees, MAG will collect voluntary contributions to the "September 11th Fund," a joint venture of the United Way and the New York Community Trust.

On the remaining free days--October 9, 16, 23, and 30--the gallery will be open during its regular hours from noon to 9 p.m. with free noontime programs.

Philosopher ponders the profound

Alfonso Gomez-Lobo, Ryan Family Professor of Metaphysics and Moral Philosophy at Georgetown University, will discuss "Socratic Ethics" at 4:30 p.m. Friday, October 12, in Room 2110-D Dewey Hall on the River Campus. Gomez-Lobo specializes in Greek philosophy, history of ethics, and contemporary natural law theory. Part of the Department of Philosophy's annual colloquium series, the event is free and open to the public.

Multiple intelligences examined

A three-part series on the theory of multiple intelligences will be held at the Strong Museum beginning Monday, October 15, and continuing on October 22 and 29. Each session lasts from 4-6 p.m. and is organized by the Center for Professional Development and Education Reform at the Warner School. Registration deadline is October 10. Faculty contribute to 26-volume work

Faculty members from six disciplines at the University will have their work published in the International Encyclopedia of Social and Behavioral Sciences, expected for release later this year. Published by Elsevier Science, the 26-volume work, the largest of its type, attempts to create a complete map of the social and behavioral sciences. In addition to a printed version, the resource also will be available in a fully-searchable format online.

Contributing to the encyclopedia are Mohammed Bamyeh, visiting scholar in the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures; Dale Dannefer, professor of education; Robert Foster, associate professor of anthropology; Howard Kirschenbaum, Frontier Professor of School, Family, and Community Relations at the Warner School; Robert Ader, George L. Engel Professor of Psychosocial Medicine at the School of Medicine and Dentistry; Richard Aslin, professor of brain and cognitive sciences; Edward Deci, professor of clinical and social sciences in psychology; Robert Jacobs, associate professor of brain and cognitive sciences; Harry T. Reis, professor of clinical and social sciences in psychology; and Richard Ryan, professor of clinical and social sciences in psychology.

Med Center offers hatha yoga

Beginning October 2, the Medical Center will offer classes in hatha yoga. Participants will work on breath, posture, movement, and control of mind. Jim Thompson, a registered physical therapist and teacher at the Center for Aplomb and Yoga, is offering a six-week course at the MC Athletic Club every Tuesday from 5:15-6:30 p.m. For information, call Heather at x5-2437.
