Meliora Weekend celebrates freedom

Meliora Weekend kicks off October 12-14, combining Reunion, Homecoming, Family Weekend, and Stonehurst Regatta in the College's new fall tradition.

Along with numerous events, reunions, and celebrations, the weekend will--with its theme of freedom--provide an opportunity for the entire Rochester community to discuss the ways peace, freedom, and security are intertwined in how we live.

"We've asked the speakers to explicitly integrate recent events into their programs as appropriate," says President Jackson. "Now, perhaps more than ever, is the time for reaffirmation of the concept of freedom."

A special ceremony of hope and remembrance will honor those lost and missing as a result of the September 11 terror attacks. Everyone is invited to attend the ceremony on Friday at 5:15 p.m. between Burton and Crosby residence halls.

Nearly two dozen speakers will address issues of freedom. Scheduled speakers include U.S. Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta, former Senator Bill Bradley (D-N.J.), and former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Jeane Kirkpatrick.

In total, more than 100 weekend activities are planned, including athletic events, musical performances, theater productions, art exhibitions, and religious services. (See the Meliora Weekend schedule of events on page two for a more complete listing. And for the most up-to-date and complete information, visit www.rochester.edu/alumni/meliora2001.)

Meliora Weekend headquarters and hospitality, located in the Hirst Lounge on the second (ground) floor of Wilson Commons, is open for check-in, onsite registration, and general information on Friday, October 12, 8 a.m.-10 p.m., and Saturday, October 13, 7 a.m.-5 p.m. Or call Meliora Weekend Headquarters, x5-1809.

A $20 registration fee--waived for staff, students, and faculty--covers all events, with the exception of a few performances and meals. Parking is free with shuttle service provided.

Events are open to the public. Advanced registration is required. For more information, call the Office of College Advancement at x3-5888 or register on the Web at www.rochester.edu/alumni and click on "register now."
