In BriefCampus blood drive plannedThe American Red Cross needs blood donations. A faculty/staff blood drive is scheduled for Tuesday, October 23, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., May Room, Wilson Commons. Polish studies center expandsThe Skalny Center for Polish and Central European Studies moves to new offices this month at the University. With a recent gift from Robert and Jill Klimasewski, the Skalny Center's new location on the first floor of Harkness Hall on the River Campus will provide greater access to the public and build on its outreach to the Polish-American community in western New York. Since it was established in 1994, the center has sponsored research and teaching on the historical legacy and political and economic changes within Central Europe. Philosophy conference upcomingGraduate students in the Department of Philosophy are hosting a graduate conference in epistemology on Friday, November 2, and Saturday, November 3, on the River Campus. This is the first time the conference is being held at Rochester. Participants include graduate students from such schools as Brown University, MIT, SUNY Stony Brook, the University of Chicago, and the University of Massachusetts. They will present their work on topics in epistemology, or the theory of knowledge--a subject that attempts to understand the nature of knowledge and its related concepts. Festival features Polish filmsThe Skalny Center for Polish and Central European Studies at the University announces the 2001 Polish Film Festival from October 26 to November 1. The festival is hosted by the Little Theatre and is sponsored by the Skalny Center through a grant from the Louis Skalny Foundation. All tickets can be purchased at the Little Theatre box office before each show. For more information, call x5-9898. Research participants neededSmoking-related health concerns--Volunteers are needed for a study to assess health-related concerns and behaviors of those who smoke. Supported by the National Institutes of Health, the study examines how to modify smoking and diet behaviors. The study will monitor the health of 1,000 individuals who smoke for 18 months. Participants should be 18 years of age or older, smoke five or more cigarettes per day, be able to read, write, and speak English. Participants will receive proven smoking-cessation resources, free cholesterol tests, free parking, and compensation for participation. For more information, call 922-7670.
