Forum examines poverty among women

Women make up the majority of the 1.5 billion people living in extreme poverty in the world, with incomes of $1 a day or less, according to the United Nations. To examine cause and effect of women in poverty, a panel composed of social activists and economists will discuss "The Roots of Women's Poverty" on Thursday, October 25, at the Memorial Art Gallery, as part of this year's Elizabeth Cady Stanton/Susan B. Anthony Conversations on Contemporary Issues.

Sponsored by the Susan B. Anthony Center for Women's Leadership at the University, the panel discussion will feature nationally known experts in economics and women's issues including mediator Rachel Jones, news correspondent with National Public Radio; Mimi Abramowitz, a professor at Hunter College who has researched and written about women and welfare policy, welfare reform, and welfare rights activism; Melissa Arch-Walton, activist in issues involving women and poverty; Ann Crittenden, former New York Times reporter nominated for the Pulitzer Prize for her writing on economic issues; and Cindy Hounsell, founder and executive director of the Women's Institute for a Secure Retirement.

The evening begins with a reception and light supper at 5:30 p.m. Admission to the reception is $40 per person and $75 per couple. Coffee and dessert will be offered after the panel discussion and forum. Admission to the forum and coffee and dessert is free. In addition, there will be a "More Conversation Breakfast" with the panelists from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Friday, October 26. Breakfast admission is $25 per person.

Reservations for all events are required. For additional information and reservations, call the Anthony Center at x5-8799.
