New hire orientation canceled

New hire orientations for the weeks of December 24 and 31 have been canceled due to the Christmas and New Year Holidays. New hire orientation will resume January 7.

Contact an employment liaison (HR assistant) to discuss offers and start dates during those weeks.


Scholarships aid nursing students

The School of Nursing will receive $97,720 over the next two years for a new grant, "Educational Mobility for Financial Aid Programs," from the Helene Fuld Health Trust, HSBC Bank USA Trustee. The investigators are Dean of the School of Nursing Patricia Chiverton and Joanne Clements, assistant professor of clinical nursing and coordinator of the R.N. to B.S. program. The funding is intended to assist economically disadvantaged nursing students with scholarship funding. Preference will be given to racially/ethnically diverse students and those from rural areas.


Competition fosters creativity

An award will be presented to a University faculty member (including residents, fellows, instructors, and clinical and academic faculty) who submits the winning creative work in any medium (e.g., poetry, fiction, fine arts, photography, or personal essay) that focuses on issues of human values in health care. Evaluation criteria include focus on and clarity of expression of human values in health care, originality, skill of presentation, and overall quality. Submission deadline is May 3, 2002. The winner will receive a prize of $200 and an inscribed plaque.

Warner School presents programs

The Warner School invites University employees to attend an information seminar on the educational programs offered through the school. A "Brown Bag Lunch" session will be held on Monday, November 19, and Monday, December 10, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Stackel Room at Wilson Commons. Strong supports diabetes awareness

The Unit Diabetes Specialists Committee at Strong Memorial Hospital is sponsoring Diabetes Awareness Day, November 14, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Strong cafeteria.

Information will be provided by various hospital departments and diabetic-affiliated companies. The effort is part of Project Believe, which has the goal of making Rochester the healthiest community in America by 2020.


Symposium offers tips for success

The Medical Center Administrative Group presents "Caring for the Professional and Personal Me" on Wednesday, November 14 in the Class of 1962 Auditorium of the Medical Research Building. The symposium addresses issues related to stress management on and off the job, dressing for success, and interpersonal skills.

Registration begins at 8:15 a.m. with closing remarks at 3 p.m. Additional information and registration forms are available online at www.urmc.rochester.edu/urmc/mcag.


Auction gala includes wine tasting

Wine lovers may find their next favorite vintage during the "Toast to Your Health" wine tasting and auction fund-raiser on Saturday, November 17 in the Arthur Kornberg Medical Research Building of the Medical Center. Funds will support community health, patient care, and the purchase of state-of-the-art equipment at Strong Memorial Hospital.

The black-tie optional event begins at 5:30 p.m., with a tasting with vintners, followed by a five-course dinner prepared by The Grill at Water Street. To purchase tickets or donate to the event, call Anna Robertson at x5-3826.


Give the gift of holiday cheer

Residential Life and the Community Service Coalition, along with the Sojourner House and the Friends of Strong, invite the University community to participate in the campus-wide "Gifts for the Giving Holiday Project." The goal is to distribute over 500 holiday gift bags to Rochester families in need.

Individuals or departments can sign up to participate. The deadline is November 30. Gift bags will be collected on December 7. For additional information, e-mail quad@reslife.rochester.edu or contact Eleanor Oi at x5-5685.


Telephone directories coming

The Official 2002 Rochester Area White Yellow Page telephone directories are scheduled to deliver to the University on November 12. Information Technology Services will manage the distribution of directories to campus locations beginning November 13. Distribution in the Medical Center also will begin November 13. The Medical Center pick-up location information will be provided via e-mail and in Update.

In an effort to support the University's recycling efforts, River Campus recycling bins will be located at the rear of Harkness Hall, and Medical Center recycling bins will be located at the north end of Goler House and in the area of the receiving docks.


Spring book orders due

Book orders for the spring semester were due on Wednesday, October 30. Additional orders should be submitted to the bookstore as soon as possible. Early book orders allow the bookstore to refund more money to students when books are sold back at the end of the semester.
