Physicist discusses neural coding

The 18th annual David L. Dexter Lecture features William Bialek of the Department of Physics, Princeton University, on Wednesday, November 7, at 4 p.m. in Bausch Lomb 109, preceded by a social tea at 3:30 in the Bausch Lomb lobby.

During his talk "Pushing the Physical Limits: Optimization in Neural Coding and Computation," Bialek will discuss how the brain encodes and processes sensory information, resulting in neural computation and learning. Bialek is a leading theorist in the subfield of biological physics known as neural coding and coauthor of the seminal book in the field, Spikes: Exploring the Neural Code.

Sponsed by the Department of Physics and Astronomy, the Dexter Lecture series is named in honor David Dexter, who was a longtime theoretical condensed matter physicist in the physics department. Recent speakers in this series have included, Sir Roger Penrose, Albert Libchaber, Robert Austin, Charles Bennett, Britton Chance, and Alexei Abrikosov.
