Information on copyright compliance

As preparation of course materials for the upcoming semester begins, instructors should be mindful to comply with federal copyright law. Works subject to copyright protection should only be used with permission of the copyright owner or with a documented determination of fair use or other exception to the copyright law. This includes course materials placed on electronic reserve.

Section 107 of the copyright law sets forth four factors to be considered when making a determination of fair use. To assist in the process, a fair use analysis worksheet is available online at www.lib.rochester.edu/copyright/wksheet.htm.

It is the responsibility of the instructor to determine if copyright permission is needed. Contact Associate Provost Lynne Davidson at ldavidson@admin.rochester.edu or x3-4765 for questions regarding the University's policy or for assistance in obtaining copyright permissions. Additional information is available on line at www.lib.rochester.edu/copyright.
