RENAISSANCE RARITIES--Made by an unknown German and featuring the miniature portraits of Johannes IV and Sigismund, Dukes of Bavaria, [from the manuscript Reim-Chronic (ca. 1470)], the image is one example of the works on display at the Memorial Art Gallery in The Renaissance Print: Art and Culture in Germany and the Low Countries, 1470-1600, opening December 7 and continuing through March 3.

December 4--What's Up. Marjorie Searl, chief curator, speaks on "The Wanderer," a 1943 painting by American artist George Grosz. This informal talk is followed by an opportunity to ask questions. 20th-Century Gallery, 5:30 p.m.

December 4--Los Pastores (The Shepherds' Story). This 16th-century Renaissance play with music recounts the shepherd's journey at the time of Christ. Through January 13, 2002--American Spectrum: Painting and Sculpture from the Smith College Museum of Art. Spanning 250 years of American art, American Spectrum includes 61 paintings and 14 sculptures by Alexander Calder, John Singleton Copley, Winslow Homer, Edward Hopper, Georgia O'Keeffe, and Joan Mitchell, to name a few. Grand Gallery.

December 7-March 3, 2002--The Renaissance Print: Art and Culture in Germany and the Low Countries, 1470­1600. This exhibition features 33 works from the gallery's permanent collection and a rare book from Rush Rhees Library. Highlights include woodcuts and engravings by Albracht Durer and others.

Long-term installations

Through 2001--New Acquisitions for a New Millennium. Showcases 21 masterworks acquired during the last four years, including one of the most significant acquisitions in gallery history--the Inner Coffin of Pa-debehu-Aset, an Egyptian official of the fourth century B.C.E.

Through 2002--About Face: Copley's Portrait of a Colonial Silversmith. An interactive installation about Colonial American portrait painter John Singleton Copley and silversmith Nathaniel Hurd. Dorothy McBride Gill Education Center.

At Rush Rhees Library

Through December 20--Mercator Projections. Exhibition of photographs by Stephen Eckel, studio technician at the Sage Art Center, taken using a pinhole camera. Gallery of Art and Music Library; Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturday, noon to 5 p.m.; and Sunday, noon to 10 p.m.

Through December 31--Ansel Adams and the University of Rochester: Negotiating for Art. This exhibition, researched and organized by student curator Bella Muccari, includes 38 prints from Creative Change, a book created by the University to raise funds for a women's dormitory. The exhibit is presented in two parts. Materials on the background and development of Creative Change are located in the Friedlander Lobby; original Ansel Adams photographs are displayed on the second floor of Rush Rhees library in the Department of Rare Books, Special Collections and Preservation; Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Through January 2002--Freedom to Read: Books Banned through the Centuries. The exhibition features more than 80 pieces of written work, most of which come from the University's permanent collections, including first editions of Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species and John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath. Department of Rare Books, Special Collections and Preservation; Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Through January 2002--Roger Mertin: Photography. An exhibition of the photographic works by the late Roger Mertin, who was professor of art and art history at the University for 26 years. Hartnett Gallery; Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, noon to 6 p.m.
