In BriefVolunteers exceed expectationsChildren Are Rochester's Excellence, an initiative of the Community Service Network (CSN) at the University, produced almost 3,000 hours of service by students during the spring semester. The leader in hours worked was Tiernan Hall, reporting more than 700 hours of service supporting youth. The goal of C.A.R.E 2001 to provide at least 2,001 volunteer hours to programs for children and youth exceeded expectations. Through the initiative, CSN strives to promote service to improve the lives of children, respond to community needs and goals, encourage people to help one another, offer opportunities for learning, and enrich students' experiences in the city of Rochester. CSN is a student organization housed at the Community Learning Center (CLC) on the River Campus. For more information about C.A.R.E. 2001 or other programs and services of CSN, call x5-5957 (275-5957) or e-mail mlws@mail.rochester.edu.

Eastman wants you to knowStudents planning to take a music theory course during their academic years at the University will need to take the Music Theory Placement Exam, only offered during orientation. The exam takes place Monday, August 27, at 12:15 p.m. (Location TBA.) Auditions for music ensembles will be held during the first few days of classes this fall. Check the music bulletin board (Todd Union, 2nd floor) and sign up for a time. Most ensembles require students to prepare one piece and be prepared to sight read. Anyone who performs at an intermediate level on a standard western instrument or in voice may audition for applied music lessons taught for credit at the Eastman School of Music. Application deadline is August 15. Auditions for both the University Symphony Orchestra and the University Chamber Orchestra will be held in Strong Auditorium the weeks of August 27 and September 3. The Symphony Orchestra, which numbers nearly 100 members, is open to both students and musicians from the greater Rochester community. The Chamber Orchestra is a select, 40-piece, all-student ensemble. Candidates will need to prepare three minutes of solo work of their choice and will be asked to sight read from standard orchestral repertoire. Auditions will be held from 9:30-11:30 a.m. and from 1-3 p.m. on Thursday, August 30; from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and from 4-7 p.m. on Friday, August 31; and from 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and 2-4 p.m. on Tuesday, September 4. Scholarships target at-risk studentsA $270,000 grant from the National Science Foundation will give scholarship aid to select freshmen and sophomores who want to major in computer science, mathematics, or an engineering field at the University. The special nature of the grant is intended to support low-income students in disciplines where the attrition rates can be high. Along with added academic support, additional funds close to $3,000 for each participating student will help reduce dependence on loans or work-study burdens. Since women and members of minority groups are often underrepresented in these fields, they will make up at least half of those selected for the new program.
