Everyone can help conserve energy

Central Utilities is asking everyone to do their part to help the University conserve energy.

Many of the electronic devices found in home offices and student rooms--computers, fax machines, copiers, printers, monitors, digital cameras, televisions, and stereos--are responsible for a high percentage of electrical usage.

To help reduce energy costs, Central Utilities is asking students to turn off electronic devices, fans, and lights when not in use. Students also can help curb energy expenses by avoiding such energy-demanding tasks as laundry during the peak demand hours of 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Winter is an especially important time to follow energy conservation tips. Closing windows and doors when possible can significantly cut heating costs. Also, keeping curtains closed and radiators free of clutter helps air circulate and heat rooms more efficently.

Students also should make sure water in showers and sinks is completely turned off to avoid wasting water.

Central Utilities wants to remind students to report problems such as broken windows or equipment malfunctions to the Facilities Customer Service Center at x3-4567 (273-4567).

For suggestions or questions on energy conservation issues, contact Morris Pierce at x5-4331 (275-4331) or Tracy Herbert at x3-4704 (273-4704).
