Staying safe takes teamwork

The University is a unique environment offering teaching, research, patient care services, and community involvement in an atmosphere of updated, well-maintained facilities. Though many people perceive a college campus to be a safe, isolated entity void of criminal activity, students should not forget that crime knows no arbitrary boundaries or distinctions.

Everyone needs to participate in efforts to maintain safety. Of great importance are protective measures that individuals can take to help insure safety.

University Security Services suggests that students make these personal tips part of their daily routine:;

  • Avoid walking alone after dark. Walk with others or use personal safety escort and transportation services.

  • Stay aware of your surroundings. Avoid confrontation. When traveling off campus to a new destination, research the area before setting out.

  • Use only well-lighted and well-traveled pathways or roads.

  • Have a plan! Mentally review what you would do if you found yourself in a situation that required an immediate response. Rehearse your plan so you're not caught off-guard.
