Students now receive dollar for dollar value on any funds deposited into their declining balance accounts. Students can also add funds to the declining balance throughout the year and use their declining balance at the Corner Store. Meal plan choice will no longer be contingent upon residence halls students will continue to receive an automatic 8 percent tax-free savings on all purchases made using a meal plan. The plans themselves have been streamlined to minimize confusion and maximize flexibility. UR Gold Declining Balance This plan provides sophomores and upperclassmen with a bank of declining dollars that can be used at any dining location during hours of operation. Sophomores must participate at a minimum level of $2,400 on this plan; juniors and seniors can buy in at any level. However, any deposit lower than $1,200 and students will miss an opportunity to take advantage of the 5 percent worth of bonus dollars ($60), free for early participation. In addition students will receive $180 and $360 of bonus dollars respectively for an early commitment of $1,800 or $2,400. Declining Balance Plus Meals Three different plans guarantee 14, 10, or 6 meals per week plus $500, $700, and $900 in declining balance funds, respectively. These plans are open to all students, however freshmen must choose between the Declining Balance Plus 14 or 10 options. Similar to Declining Balance dollars, meals can be used at any dining facility. Students using meals in an a la carte location will be charged a $6 meal equivalency. For additional meal plan information, contact Customer Service Center at x5-3975 (275-3975). Learn about resources and services to simplify and enrich life as a Rochester student. The following links from the Web site offer a sample of library services: About the Libraries: (www.lib.rochester.edu/main/about.htm) Quick overview of collections and services on all Rochester campuses. Voyager: (http://groucho.lib.rochester.edu) The University's catalog and database-link system, with many search options for books, journals, index databases, and full-text sources. New features include:
Databases: (www.lib.rochester.edu/database) The electronic databases page gives a quick overview of nearly 200 databases for journal articles and other sources available to Rochester students. Subject Guides: (www.lib.rochester.edu/main/subject.htm) Compiled by Rochester librarians, these are customized lists leading students to the best print or online sources (including Internet links) in each subject. UR Library Sites: (www.lib.rochester.edu/main/projects.htm) Check out Web sites created by some of our librarians, namely the ones for Camelot and Robin Hood. Undergraduate Student Projects: (www.lib.rochester.edu/camelot/carr-dh.htm) See a new research project by undergraduate Dave Howland, part of the Camelot site, with fascinating information about the 1895 J. Comyns Carr play, King Arthur. Or visit www.lib.rochester.edu/rbk/Projects.htm for student history papers analyzing and interpreting original manuscripts in the Department of Rare Books, Special Collections, and Preservation. Visit Us in Person The libraries offer great spaces for studying, working in small groups, meeting friends, or getting coffee and a bagel. In Rush Rhees Library, popular spaces include the 1930s-style Martin E. Messinger Periodical Reading Room, the Multimedia Center, and the third-floor stacks behind the Management Library. A Starbuck's coffee outlet operates from the rear ground-floor lobby. Carlson Library, home of collections for engineering and most of the sciences, has popular study areas and late-night hours. The Physics-Optics-Astronomy Library offers a focused collection for work in those specialties. Join Us for Lectures A new feature this year is the "Neilly Series," lectures on a wide range of topics. The first lecture is September 19 in the Welles-Brown Room. History Professor Joan Rubin will discuss a noted controversy about poetry reviews. Meet Our People Staff in all the River Campus libraries enjoy meeting and working with students. Individual appointments with librarians are a good coping strategy for research projects. At Rush Rhees (humanities and social sciences), ask about TPRA (Term Paper Research Assistance). For science projects visit Carlson Library and ask about the Library Research and Writing Assistance Program. Talk with a Librarian Online Students can get real-time reference assistance online, too, during certain hours. Our new "chat" service is similar to AOL's Instant Messenger. Simply type in a question and get immediate responses from a "live" correspondent. Take a (New) Number All undergraduates now have a new University ID number. Students can use it for many purposes, including getting to a library record in Voyager. Stop in and ask library staff about getting a new number. UNIVERSITY FACILITIES AND SERVICES Let's talk trash! Activities at the University result in a tremendous amount of solid waste. Efforts to minimize this waste and its impact on the environment are ongoing. Everyone has a role to play to achieve success in recycling and waste minimization. The best way to manage waste is to never generate it in the first place. Planning ahead, not wasting supplies, proofreading documents prior to printing, using e-mail rather than memos, and other simple waste avoidance actions can add up to a huge reduction in waste. Recycling Buying recyclable items is the first step. However, this will do no good unless recyclable materials are placed in the proper receptacle for recycling. Each person's effort is essential. This involves placing the material in the proper container as well as not contaminating the recyclables with nonrecyclable items. Recycling containers are located at many points on the River Campus. For additional information about recycling, call River Campus, x3-4567 (273-4567); Medical Center, x5-6253 (275-6253); Eastman School, x4-1170 (274-1170); and Memorial Art Gallery, 473-7720, ext. 3041. Waste Minimization Committee This group, which includes students as members, meets periodically to evaluate current waste-disposal practices and to discuss ways to decrease overall waste generation. To learn more, call Mark Schwartz, x5-2026 (275-2026), or Marvin Stillman, x5-2056 (275-2056).
