Nominate a student

The Office of the Dean of Students is accepting nominations for the University Citizenship/Community Leadership Award, given to students who have distinguished themselves through their achievements, service, and contributions to the common good. Nomination forms are available in 510 Wilson Commons and online at www.rochester.edu/student-srvcs/dos/awards.html. The deadline for submission is Friday, February 8.

Amnesty International hosts panel

The University chapter of Amnesty International will sponsor a panel discussion titled "Who Picks Your Fruit?: Issues Facing Migrant Farmworkers" at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, February 5, in 321 Morey Hall. Panel speakers include Betty Garcia Matthewson of the Cornell Migrant Program, Jim Schmitt of the Farmworkers' Legal Aid Society, Bob Lynch of the Geneseo Migrant Center, and farmworker organizer Aspacio Alcantara. Audience members will have the opportunity to ask questions and make comments.

Bookstore adds online ordering

The University Bookstore is offering a new online service for placing orders for general reading titles. Faculty and staff can visit www.bkstore.com/urochester/bookorders.html to complete the order form.

This service cannot be used for submitting textbook adoptions. For that, faculty and staff should continue to visit www.bkstore.com/urochester/index.html and click on the "faculty services" option.

Teen takes LLE research national

Joshua Keegan, a senior at the Aquinas Institute, has earned recognition in the Intel Science Talent Search for his research project conducted last summer at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics' program for high school students. Working with Research Engineer Mark Guardalben, Keegan wrote a computer program that models a new type of laser amplifier. Keegan is one of just 300 semifinalists chosen from the more than 1,500 who entered the competition that is often regarded as a "Junior Nobel Prize."

Workshop for caregivers

Strong Health, in partnership with Mercy Center is offering a series of educational workshops for University employees and family members planning for the care of aging relatives and friends. "Caring for an Aging Loved One" is a comprehensive program specifically developed to address the needs of family members and friends of older adults.

Registrations are being accepted now for spring and winter sessions. For additional information on registration, dates, times, and locations, call Lucia Zeron-Castillejo, program manager for the Mercy Center with the Aging, at 244-5190 or register by e-mail at mca@mercyrochester.org

Join MAG for half price

University employees who sign on as first-time members of the Memorial Art Gallery receive 50 percent off the cost of a supporter-level membership. The "supporter" (individual or family/dual) is a new level of membership that includes free general admission, two free tickets to every preview party, and discounts at the Gallery Store and Creative Workshop, among other things. New members receive 50 percent off the regular price of $80.

MAG also is introducing the "associate" level (individual or family/dual) for members who want to enjoy basic gallery benefits but prefer to pay as they go for preview parties and ticketed exhibitions. An associate membership includes free general admission and discounts on preview party tickets and on purchases at the Gallery Store and Creative Workshop.
