Scholarship honors Lathans

Newport
Roger and Joan Lathan with President Jackson

An endowed scholarship fund for undergraduates has been established to recognize Vice President Emeritus and Honorary Trustee Roger Lathan '54 for his more than 40 years of service to the University.

The creation of the Roger and Joan Lathan Scholarship Fund "signifies the enormous respect and admiration that Roger has from the board and from me for his role in advancing the University over the past four decades," said President Jackson.

"No individual personifies the University--or has been more loyal to it--than Roger," added Jackson. "And his wife, Joan, has been his constant, and enthusiastic, supporter in all of his endeavors on behalf of our institution."

Lathan served under five of the University's nine presidents. He joined the University in 1960, serving a variety of positions in development and alumni affairs. He was named assistant vice president for University relations in 1979 and vice president for University relations in 1981. He became vice president and general secretary, with responsibility for trustee relations and assisting the president, in 1987. Since 1997, Lathan has held the title of vice president emeritus and special assistant to the president. He also is an honorary life trustee.
