'Beautiful Mind' biographer to give talk

Writer Sylvia Nasar will discuss her prize-winning biography, A Beautiful Mind, at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, February 26, in the Welles-Brown Room of Rush Rhees Library. A journalist and economist, Nasar, will offer insights about mathematical genius John Forbes Nash Jr. and his battle with schizophrenia.

The basis for the current feature film of the same name directed by Ron Howard and starring Russell Crowe as Nash, A Beautiful Mind traces the mathematician's life from the beginnings of his genius through his struggle with mental illness to his 1994 win of the Nobel Prize in economics.

Nasar describes writing the book--a process that took more than two years--as "one of the most satisfying experiences imaginable." The book, translated into half a dozen languages, has won several awards, including the 1998 National Book Critics Circle Award for biography, and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize.

Nasar holds a Knight Chair in Journalism at Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism. She has been a writer for The New York Times, Fortune Magazine, and U.S. News & World Report. Currently, she is completing a book about 20th-century economic thinkers.

Her presentation, which is free and open to the public, is part of the continuing Neilly Series, sponsored by the Andrew H. and Janet Dayton Neilly Endowed Fund of the River Campus Libraries. For more information, contact x5-4461.
