Laser lab takes summer camp up a notch
From July 8 to August 30, students will work closely with the laboratory staff on research projects and attend seminars in science, technology, and professional ethics. The experience will culminate in presentations by the students at a symposium during the final week. In the past, several projects have led to recognition in national science competitions. Last year Joshua Keegan, a senior at the Aquinas Institute, was among just 300 nationwide who reached the semifinals of the Intel Science Talent Search, and another student was a finalist in the new Siemens Westinghouse competition. Area high school juniors, especially women and underrepresented minorities, are invited to apply. Applications should include a short essay describing the student's interest in science and technology, along with a supporting letter from a teacher. The application deadline is March 22. Selected applicants will be interviewed and chosen by the end of April. For more information and application materials, contact the program's director, senior scientist Stephen Craxton, at x5-5467. The University sponsors many summer programs with a variety of themes for children and teens. See the related story on page three for more details.
