In BriefStudent employee honoredTia Neely '03, who works with Strong Children's Hospital's School-Based Asthma Intervention program, has been named Student Employee of the Year, an annual award given by the University Career Center. A senior level student on the project, Neely trains and assists other students with their daily work and communicates with school nurses, community physicians, and study participants, including numerous monthly home visits with asthma sufferers. The first and second runner-ups are Crista Crittenden '02 and Jessica DeGroote '02. Other nominees include Christina Devries '03, Erika Jimenez '04, Jasmine Ellison '02, Joseph Rogers '02, Angela Cucci '03, Dorothy Bauch '05, Gavin Hickey '02, Aarthi Iyer '03, Alexa Phillips '04, Elizabeth Greer '03, Karyn Nugent '03, and Elizabeth Scime '02.
Women's Club hosts speakerArmenta Hummings, professor of music performance and community education at the Eastman School, will speak to the University's Women's Club on Thursday, April 4. Hummings is the director of the African-American Gateways Musical Festival. The talk will be held at the Shadow Lake Golf Club in Penfield and will include a social time at 11:30 a.m. and luncheon at noon, followed by Hummings' program. Ushers neededThe Commencement Committee is looking for staff and students to participate as ushers in the College and Nursing Commencement ceremony on May 19. Ushers assist with final preparations, greet family and friends, distribute ceremony programs, assist guests to special seating areas, provide directions, and answer questions. Panel discusses breast cancerThe Comprehensive Breast Cancer Program at the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center will hold a dinner and panel discussion on nutrition and breast cancer at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, April 4, at the Medical Center, Room 1-9576. The cost is $15 per person, which includes dinner. Scholarships are available for eligible registrants. Kids join parents at workThe Medical Center Administrative Group is sponsoring a "Take Your Children To Work Day" on Thursday, April 25, from 8 a.m. to noon. Children between 9 and 15 years of age can join their parents at work to learn about and experience the diverse career opportunities available at the University. Registration is limited to 200 participants and will be filled on a first-come-first-serve basis. Creativity awardedThe School of Nursing is sponsoring two awards for creativity to recognize the faculty member and student who submits the best creative work in any medium, including poetry, fiction, fine arts, photography, or personal essay, dealing with issues of human values in health care. The winners will receive a prize of $200 and an inscribed plaque. Deadline for submission is Friday, May 3, 4 p.m. All works should be submitted to Andrea Ehmann in the Division of Medical Humanities, MED 1-6321; to Carol Root in the School of Nursing, Helen Wood Hall, 2nd floor, Room 2W-220; or by intramural mail to Madeline Schmitt, Box SON.
